Marketing in the News: Subway and PepsiCo
I chose to write about Subway hiring the CMO from PepsiCo beverages to lead global marketing because when I was looking through topics to write about, this one stood out to me. I love eating at Subway and I love a nice can of Pepsi, so I was interested in seeing what was going on between PepsiCo and Subway.
This article starts off by talking about how Subway has appointed former PepsiCo beverages marketer Greg Lyons. Greg Lyons departed from PepsiCo last month around the same time the Pepsi brand has started struggling to grow their market share. This occurred when PepsiCo started ramping up bets on the prebiotic soda category through its $2 billion Poppi acquisition.
“PepsiCo and its Frito-Lay snacks subsidiary are long standing Subway partners nd last year extended their contracts with the QSR.” To which then the article states that, “Interim Subway CEO Walsh previously serves as the brand’s local CMO and is taking over a turnaround plan..” They are going to start a ‘refresh’ on the menu ad restaurant remodeling and a “raft of new franchise agreements around the world.”
The entire brand is planning on changing due to this new change which is a reversal of the plans from Chidsey’s tenure, when Subway was shrinking.
This is a whole new marketing strategy to help the Subway company as they attempt to refresh. I think this was a good move because as I was reading the article, it sounded like it needed to happen. Under Chidsey’s plans, it sounds like the company wasn’t doing as well, and the reversal of his plans could probably do good things. People like new and I believe that a refresh of the menu could do good for Subway. I believe I would have done the same thing if I was in their position.
